>> reporter: outside the jail, there was no question. casey anthony now free. the suv ra tracked by news choppers. kristen dahlgren, nbc news, orlando. our other big story this morning, the capture of a suspected killer who escaped from d.c. superior court. after nearly 24 hours on the run, u.s. marbles say james brewer turned himself in yesterday afternoon. authorities say brewer switched i.d. bracelets with another prisoner and walked out of the courthouse. he was first arrested thursday and charged in the june murder of 71-year-old solomon reece. brewer faces escape charges as well. it is 9:01. switch gears and take a look at our forecast this morning. we're looking for one more nice day and then. >> and then. today is the good one. focus on what you have that's good and it's right in front of you. you know what i mean? >> yes. >> today is looking a-okay for anything you would like to get done. here's a picture to prove it to you. a blue sky out there today.

great weather down at the coast. >> sounds good. thank you, chuck. >> we are following breaking news out of bethesda where the escalators, all of them at the bethesda metro station are out of service right now because of mechanical problems. also all the escalators at the q street entrance of the dupont circle station are also down because of similar problems. both stations remain open right now. we'll keep you posted on the situation. we're following breaking news out of britain where police made the 10th arrest in a hacking scandal there. rebekah brooks, chief executive who stepped down was taken into custody this morning. it comes the same day as second round of full page ads for rupert murdoch which said news corp. would assist. coming under fire for their close relationships with

murdoch. the white house taking heat over a meeting with the dalai lama. they met for 45 minutes yesterday. it reaffirms the president's belief that china should meet with the dalai lama to amend their differences. they asked the u.s. to rescind hours before the meeting with the dalai lama. more meetings expected between the president and congressional republicans in an effort to end the debt limit crisis. there are 16 days until the ceiling is reached. in his weekly internet and radio addresses said higher taxes on the wealthy will raise revenue. republicans were quick to shoot it down saying it's not a tax problem. it's a spending problem. >> the truth is you can't solve our deficit without cutting spending but you can't solve it without asking the weightiest

americans to pay their fair share. >> washington has consistently demonstrated that it cannot control its urge to spend. >> if the debt ceiling is reached, money for military pay, veterans affairs, even the fbi and federal courts could be cut off because the government could no longer pay for them. >> meanwhile, maryland governor martin o'malley has harsh words for republican lawmakers. they accused tkpop members of intentionally coming close to the debt ceiling trying to defeat president obama in next year's election. republicans dismissed that claim saying his comments are, quote, unhinged partisan rants. maryland work zone speed cameras are supposed to get drivers to slow down. apparently drivers aren't listening. so far this year cameras in the work zone on i-95 and prince george's county have led to 9,000 tickets. on the bw parkway that figure was blown out of the water with 48,000 tickets in the first half

of the year. drivers get a $40 ticket for driving by a camera at 12 miles an hour or more above the speed limit. today the u.s. women's soccer team goes for its third world cup title. they take on japan in the championship began in a tournament that's generated a lot of buzz nationwide. news 4's derrick ward is out in arlington this morning at one of the many bars where you can catch today's game. derrick? >> good morning. we're here at summer soccer bar in arlington. last time there was a u.s. world cup appearance this place was packed. they're expecting nothing different later today. as you see on the big screen back here, there actually is a thing about whales on. but there's a golf match that's actually being watched. later all eyes will be focused on frankfurt and a game that involves a slightly bigger ball. now, there was a lot of excitement in the match that got the u.s. team here. a favorable call and the challenge to a penalty that would have all but ended the women's chances to advance

against brazil. and a victory over france. it advanced team not only in the finals but the sports headlines. there are hopes that the u.s. women's team can repeat its 1999 victory and bring the trophy back to american shores. japan appears to be the sentimental favorite with their first finals appearance. even some sense that they're actually playing to boost the collective spirit in the wake of a devastating earthquake and tsunami. after that all the boosts for women's soccer in general. and that means there's a lot riding on this match. and the players know it. >> whether people want to admit it or not the stage is as big as it's ever been. >> and i think when you step foot inside a stadium like this you know that you've made it to the epitome of the ultimate top of your sport and you want to perform at your best, give it

more now on that breaking news we brought you a bit earlier. all the escalators at the bethesda metro station and dupont metro station are back in service. there were mechanical issues a bit earlier this morning. we've been told the dupont and bethesda escalators are now back to normal. a colorado woman was charged with felony sexual abuse after allegedly groping a tsa agent. 61-year-old grabbed an agent's breast earlier this week at a

security checkpoint at phoenix international airport. the tsa said she refused to go through screening and started arguing with agents, eventually groping one of them. she admits to grabbing the agent. a hail storm blocked out a third of frontier airlines fleet. it canceled another 100 flights this weekend. hail almost an inch in diameter damaged a third of the airlines fleet. frontier scrambled to put passengers on other flights, even leasing other airlines's planes to try to remedy the situation. 12 minutes after the hour. here we're looking at all this weird weather that happens eventually gets here. >> well, we've been -- there's been an unbelievable ridge of high pressure and high temperatures right in the middle of the country. and whenever you get around the periphery of that ridge, that's where the weather gets a little crazy. hail storms on the front range

chance for a quick shower out there today. no problems around town. beach forecast, water temperature out there. still in the low to mid-70s at the coastline. air temperatures low to mid-80s today and tomorrow. here's a quick peek at the four days. 88 today. that's the bargain. a quick chance for a shower or thunderstorm late, late, late tomorrow. off and on chances through the day on tuesday. it's still toasty warm and very humid on tuesday with a high near 93. and up, up, and away from there. >> thank you, chuck. >> okay. >> new overnight, casey anthony is out of jail. she was released just after midnight. that comes 12 days after she was acquitted of murder and child abuse in the death of her 2-year-old daughter caylee. the four-year sentence ended early based on time already served and good behavior. jail officials gave her $537.68 from her jailhouse account. much of that was given to her by

strangers. once outside a crowd yelled at anthony and her lawyer as they got into a waiting suv. one of the three journalists let inside described anthony's demeanor. >> i couldn't believe that it is actually happening. it was a closing to a three-year story. i thought maybe that she would have showed more emotion going out. but her and jose were very plain faced. very on a mission to go out. >> news helicopters fold the suv to a downtown orlando parking garage, never to be seen again. about an hour later, police surrounded a private jet at a small orlando airport. that plane took off on a flight plan to ohio where her parents are from. no confirmation that anthony was on that plane. mild summer conditions in our region right now won't last for very long. dangerous heat in the south and

midwest moving our way as we speak. temperatures are about 15 degrees above normal out there. texas is in the middle of its own drought. >> the worst one in decades. in dallas, temperatures have hovered above 100 degrees for the last 15 days. even overnight conditions bring no real relief. >> it's not just the highs. it's going to be the overnight lows as well which will be near 80 or upper 70s across much of the middle of the country. and that could be devastating for people who don't have air-conditioning. >> chicago is feeling the heat with no air-conditioning. utility crews are work to go restore electricity after storms knocked out power. as the temperatures rise emergency officials warn people to drink plenty of fluid and stay in the ac to avoid dehydration. one person is dead, another seriously injured after a high-speed boating accident in boston harbor. it hit a wave, went airborne and

broke apart when it landed. the coast guard said the two men were flown from the boat as it broke apart. one died on the scene. the condition of the other man is unknown. the coast guard said they plan on looking for more piece office that boat this morning. also this morning, police say graphic sexually explicit and ethnically explicit vandalism at two schools may be connected. they tagged herbert hoover and struck again at bethesda middle. darcy spencer has more on the possible connection between these crimes. >> montgomery county police are investigating acts of vandalism at two middle schools that they believe could be connected. the first happened at hoover middle school between wednesday afternoon and thursday morning. >> it was extensive vandalism and, again, it was ethnically offensive and sexually graphic. >> police responded to an alarm at north bethesda middle school.

officers found similar damage, sexually explicit paintings and hate language. self windows were broken. seven cars were also damaged with paint on paoefp avenue near the school. >> we don't know who is responsible. if it is juveniles, we want to make sure that everyone understands we don't look at this as a prank. these are serious incidents and they are being thoroughly investigated. >> the crimes are not affecting school operations during the summer months but police want to catch the vandals before they can cause more damage. >> we need to know who is responsible, what's going on and make sure that we can find those people and stop this. >> neighbors who live near the school say the crimes are disturbing. >> obviously very concerning. it's been very peaceful in the neighborhood. we've been here four years and never heard anything like this happening before. >> crime solvers is offering a $1,000 reward helping to solve these cases. in bethesda, darcy spencer, news 4 today. right now venezuela president hugo chavez is in cuba

to undergo more cancer treatment. yesterday he delegated responsibilities to his vice president and admitted he has a long road to recovery. the long-time leader had surgery last month to remove a cancerous tumor from his pelvis. he is expected to have chemotherapy and there's no word how long he would stay in cuba. now to a developing story in the philippines. 14 gunmen who kidnapped a virginia woman and her family are now demanding a ransom. she was visiting her home country when tkpeurbls say the kidnappers grabbed her and her teenage son and nephew. authorities have not said what part of virginia she is from. kidnappings for ransom has long been a program and are blamed mostly on groups links to al qaeda. a volcano is spaougs lava and ash on its third day of eruption. it began to rumble on friday.

"atlantis" is scheduled to return to kennedy space center in florida early thursday morning. no 405, no problem for southern californians apparently. travel officials say there are fewer cars on the road this weekend which became known as carmageddon because they were afraid of the possibility of massive traffic jams. while it's been smooth sailing so far during the demolition it doesn't mean people should try and hit the road today. >> if everyone, after looking at your news stations other hearing you on the radio or whatever medium you're using thinks that, oh, well, now it's okay to go in my car, that's the wrong message. >> and you remember those $4 flights being offered by jet

welcome back. this morning's wednesday's child has spent almost his entire life in the hospital for sick children here in washington. while the staff there is crazy about him, they been that jontae is ready for a real home with parents that loves him. barbara harris introduces us. >> so great to see you, jonte. hi, tiawanda. they were happy to know jontae was going to be a wednesday's child. he's lived at the center for most of his life. they're hoping he may soon find a permanent family to love him and help him to grow and develop. >> so glad to meet you. somebody looks a little bit tired. did they wake you up to come and meet me? we got started early for both of

us. but jonte is used to getting up early to go to school each day. >> in the summertime he goes half day. and he participants in occupational therapy, physical therapy. >> she said he loves school and looks forward to going every day. the horse makes a funny noise, huh? >> jonte is generally very quiet. he's nonverbal. he likes to communicate everything through his facial expressions and some sounds. he can be very happy and jovial and he can have his off days like any other child. he loves for you to hold his hand and talk to him and rub his back. >> are you a happy boy today? i'm so glad to meet you. i'm happy to be here. >> staff members say they're happy to think maybe through wednesday's child jonte will have a chance at a loving family, something every child

a funeral for a pet is being blamed for this house fire. he was trying to cremate his 11-year-old rottweiler. he used gasoline to get the fire going and it quickly spread to his home, though. he tried to get several animal shelters to help him dispose of the dog but they all told him he was, quote, too big. >> a lot of sad parts to that. >> 77 degrees. and today is going to be the happy day for the next several days. then we'll be crying, bawling. >> you're rocking as a result. you have been paying attention. one smiley face icon for the seven-day forecast. that will be for today.
